Key Components of a Salary Structure

When you receive a salary increment, it is typically distributed across your salary structure as follows:

  • Basic Salary: Increases proportionally, typically forming 40% to 50% of the revised Cost to Company (CTC).
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): Formed as 40% to 50% of basic salary, unlocking higher tax exemption limits under Section 10(13A).
  • Special Allowance: Flexible component that absorbs the residual balance of the increment.
  • Employer & Employee EPF: 12% statutory provident fund contribution rises proportionally under the EPF Act, 1952.
  • Gratuity Provision: Statutory provision calculated at ~4.81% of Basic Pay per annum under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972.
  • Professional Tax (PT): State-level deduction capped constitutionally at ₹2,500 per year (Article 276(2)).
  • Performance Bonus & Variable Pay: Often calculated as an annual percentage of revised basic salary.

Formula to Calculate Salary Hike Percentage

Hike Percentage (%) = ((New Salary - Current Salary) / Current Salary) × 100

Conversely, to calculate the new salary from a given percentage:

New Salary = Current Salary + (Current Salary × (Hike % / 100))
